Winston pumped up about playing at home

them sitting into Sunday.

The Browns have made strides this season, opening the season 2-3-1 following last year’s 0-16 campaign, but they still come to Raymond James with a 23-game road losing streak, having not won away from Cleveland since a 33-30 overtime win in Baltimore on Oct. 11, 2015.

“I’m psyched to get back out there in Ray Jay,” Winston said. “It’s been a long time for me being in Ray Jay. We’ve got to bring home a win for them. Last time we were there it was Monday Night Football, and since then it’s been like a month since we’ve been as a team in Ray Jay. It’s definitely going to be exciting at 2-3 going to be out there and get that whole atmosphere with the fans.”

Sunday’s game marks the Bucs’ only home contest over a five-game stretch. They lost at Chicago, had a bye week, then lost in Atlanta. After this week, the Bucs travel to Cincinnati and Carolina over the next two weeks.

The Bucs tweeted a video Wednesday afternoon featuring the team’s quarterbacks — Ryan Fitzpatrick, Winston and Ryan Griffin — emphasizing they were excited to get back home this week.

“Watching on TV, I heard we have a beach at Ray Jay now?” Winston said, referring to the Bucs Beach area unveiled last month outside the stadium by the south-side end zone. “Even though I’m not going to be able to participate in beach activities, it will be cool.”

As for contending with the opposing quarterback, Tampa Bay defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul feels good about the Bucs’ matchup against Baker Mayfield.

“He’s a rookie quarterback, man. You know, I love it,” Pierre-Paul said. “He’s a rookie quarterback and congrats to him to being in the NFL and I’ll be chasing him on Sunday.

“That’s what he is, right? He’s a rookie quarterback but he’s been playing well.”

What Pierre-Paul may not know is that is Tampa Bay hasn’t fared well of late against first-year signalcallers. The Bucs are 1-10 in their last 11 games against rookie quarterbacks since 2011. The NFL average winning percentage is around 65 percent during that span against rookie passers. The only rookie quarterback they beat since 2011? Bills quarterback E.J. Manuel in 2013.

Bucs coach Dirk Koetter knows something about trying to win with a rookie quarterback. As a coordinator, he had that situation with Blaine Gabbert in Jacksonville and Winston, of course, in Tampa Bay.

“If you draft a guy high, you’re expecting you’re going to play him,” Koetter said.
