WESH: Amy Sweezey named Broadcaster of Year
Meteorologist Amy Sweezey of WESHChannel 2 has a huge new honor: She is Broadcaster of the Year, according to the National Weather Association.
The nonprofit professional association has promoted excellence in operational meteorology since 1975. The annual award salutes a group member in broadcast media for public service in presenting weather information.
Alan Sealls, president of the National Weather Association, said Sweezey was deserving “for her dedication to her craft, the public, science education and young people.”
Sweezey, a children’s author, frequently gives weather talks to kids across Central Florida.
“The award may represent one year but Amy puts in the effort to elevate broadcast meteorology and humanity all years,” Sealls added.
Sweezey said it was a real honor because there are so many talented meteorologists across the country. “I’m grateful and humbled and will continue to do my best to live up to this top distinction,” she said.
She graduated magna cum laude from Loyola University Chicago before continuing her meteorological studies at Mississippi State University.
Sweezey has been a broadcast meteorologist for more than 20 years and with WESH since 2002. Weekdays, she can be seen from 4:30 to 7 a.m. on WESH and from 7 to 9 a.m. on sister station WKCFChannel 18.
She is the mother of three and has written two children’s books on weather: “It Never, Ever Snows in Florida” and “Let’s Talk Weather, TV Forecasting: Behind the Scenes.” The latter book won two medals in the 2018 Florida Authors & Publishers Association President’s Book Awards. It received a gold medal in the children’s nonfiction category and a bronze medal in the education category.
