WMFE contest salutes St. Luke’s Concert Series

- By Hal Boedeker

St. Luke’s Concert Series is the latest winner in 90.7 WMFE’s Amplify Central Florida contest.

Winners receive $2,500 in free on-air and online messaging from the public radio station. WMFE established Amplify Central Florida in July to bolster arts organizations after the state cut arts funding by 90 percent. The winners are chosen by fans of the region’s arts groups.

The concert series at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church and School in Oviedo was recognized for hosting 25 years of musical events. The concerts have featured such groups as the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra, the Brass Band of Central Florida, the UCF Symphony Orchestra and the Orlando Concert Band.

Judy Duda, executive director of St. Luke’s Concert Series, said in an email that Amplify Central Florida “gives us the opportunity to spread the good news about the free performances St. Luke’s Concert Series has offered for 25 years to a much larger slice of the Central Florida community!”

Through the honor, she said “additional numbers of families with children, the elderly population and the community-at-large will learn about the invitation they have to hear the finest musical ensembles in Central Florida perform in a beautiful and acoustically excellent venue as the free gift of St. Luke’s Concert Series.”

The first winner of Amplify Central Florida was Moonlight Players Theatre in Clermont. St. Luke’s Concert Series is the second winner.

To enter the Central Florida Amplify contest, arts groups add their events to the WMFE’s Community Calendar, then let their fans know about it.

Nominees also submit a case-for-support document to WMFE to explain their activities and what winning would mean.

Fans of those nominees can vote for their favorite, then WMFE’s Community Advisory Board picks the winner. You can learn more at wmfe.org.
