Mouse-ear headbands salute Epcot sights

- By Dewayne Bevil

Mouse-ear hats and headbands continue to be atop thousands of heads at Walt Disney World, and the options for this gear are growing. The company has more themes and genres going – riffs on characters, attractions and special occasions – than at any point since the Mouseketeers made the classic black lid a part of Americana back in the 1950s. Displays with eye-catching new designs shimmer across the theme parks and resorts.

Sometimes Disney’s inspiration for the design can be mysterious. There’s a new collection of headbands now available with an international Epcot theme. The pattern on the round ears represents the look of the theme park’s iconic Spaceship Earth. On the bows between several of the ears are designs that resemble the flags of Britain, France, Mexico and Germany – very World Showcase.

But then there’s one more and therein lies a mystery to some. It has the same silver Spaceship Earth ears, but its bow has sequins in color blocks of burgundy, powder blue and a rosy pink. It wouldn’t seem to be the flag of a country, certainly not one with a pavilion at Epcot.

As it turns out, the answer is on the other side of the park. No, it’s not the official flag of Future World, but we’re getting warm. According to the Disney Style website, these ears are patterned after the bubblegum wall, the social-media favorite backdrop that’s part of one of the exits for Spaceship Earth.

“The bow is a perfect match for our favorite wall in Future World, and celebrates that classic Epcot design style we all know and love,” reads the site (style.disney.com), which is an official outlet for Walt Disney Co.

The headbands are now selling for $27.99.

Among the bowed headband choices now are USA shout-out with blue ears with white stars and a redchecked bow plus models in pink, silver, rose gold and various polkadot combinations.
