Glenn Beck: Let your outrage go

-

COMMENTARY I’m not seeing that happening in the media and in Washington.”

He is not fan of President Donald Trump’s tweets. “If there was a magic fairy that could grant three wishes, one might be to take the president’s phone away,” Beck said. “I think it would help him.”

Beck sees limits to Trump’s influence. “There’s one Donald Trump. It’s not a party, it’s not a movement, it’s a man, and there’s one of them,” Beck said. “Like I said in the book, if Donald Trump was hit by a truck today, do you think any of this would stop or get better? No.”

In “Addicted to Outrage,” Beck writes of his remorse for feeding fans’ “addiction to outrage by giving in to my own.” He closes by offering suggestions, such as “determine the facts and deal only with facts” and “don’t label people.”

“I had a hard time with that,” Beck said. “It’s intriguing to me that conservatives believe in Christ. We’re taught to be more like Christ. Yet when you say, ‘Let’s employ the tactics of Christ,’ people say, ‘That won’t work, it’s too late. That’s why they crucified Christ.’ ”

Beck cites Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King Jr. “It’s standing on true principles and showing that being peaceful doesn’t mean surrendering. Martin Luther King never surrendered,” he said. “It only works when you are a peaceful person and there is a Judeo-Christian community that you’re trying to appeal to. If we lose our do-unto-others kind of approach, then there’s no saving us.”

Beck urges people to befriend those they disagree with because that’s what made America great.

“Anderson Cooper said to me I was an optimistic catastrophist,” Beck said. “I see disaster around the corner. However, because I know who we really are, I have tremendous hope. I was in Tampa during 9-11. I remember who we were. There were no parties, there was no difference. We were together. That’s who we really are. If tragedy strikes again, I hope we remember that.”
