Bishop Moore beats champion Leesburg

Cattoor, Hartmann lead way; Hornets improve to 6-0

Hunter Cattoor managed the chaos Leesburg’s pressure defense created on Tuesday night, scoring 31 points and dishing out five assists as undefeated Bishop Moore scored a 76-65 boys basketball road win over the two-time defending state champion Yellow Jackets.

Cattoor, a senior signed by Wofford, also grabbed nine rebounds for the Hornets (6-0), who out-rebounded the Yellow Jackets 36-16 to overcome a 22-8 Leesburg edge in turnovers forced.

Jess Hartmann added 14 points for the Hornets, who grabbed early control of the game by going 5 of 8 from 3-point range in the first quarter of the Class 6A, District 13 boys basketball game.game. Bishop Moore hit its first four shots while Leesburg was going 1 for 4 to start the game.

Lance Erving scored 26 points while Akiem Nickerson contribute­d 14 points and six steals for Leesburg (5-2).

The teams play again Jan. 17 at Bishop Moore. Leesburg will host the district tournament in February.

Leesburg, which did not lose a home game last season, has now dropped two in a row. A 63-62 loss to Auburndale last Saturday snapped a streak that had seen the Yellow Jackets win 50 of their previous 51 games.

That included victories in Leesburg’s final 16 games of the 2016-17 season and its 29-1 record last season. Port (4-1, 0-1) in an 8A, District 5 basketball game.

Seminole blanks Orange football all-stars: Seminole County standouts teamed with private school seniors Tuesday to blank Orange County 30-0 in the annual high school football CFE Cure Bowl All-Star Game at Showalter Field in Winter Park.

The Seminole squad kicked a field goal and reached the end zone twice inside the final six minutes of the first half to build a 17-0 halftime lead.

It was pair of Oviedo teammates that made big plays to help get the ball rolling in the rout. Linebacker Anthony Windham recovered a fumble with nearly seven minutes to play in the second quarter to set up a 45-yard field goal from T.J. Woodard for a 3-0 advantage.

The First Academy’s Rolous Frazier, who had a 62-yard punt return for touchdown called back, scored on a run of 20 yards. He went 25 yards on his first carry and finished with 56 yards on seven attempts.

Lyman’s Vincent Thomas, who rushed 13 times for 56 yards, carried the ball up the middle for a 13-yard score with 42 seconds to go in the first half. Hagerty teammates Jack Benzija and Andrew Suavao capped off the first half by combining for a sack.

Hagerty’s Phil Ziglar was recognized as the game’s honorary coach during the second quarter in recognitio­n of his retirement following 43 years of work in both Orange and Seminole counties.

Wolves win streak on line: Timber Creek’s 8-0 girls basketball team plays at Boone (5-1) on Wednesday night at 7:30.

Boone was also unbeaten before losing 71-51 to reigning Class 9A state champ Spruce Creek (5-1) at home on Monday night.

Timber Creek has won every game by 12 points or more with a deep, balanced team loaded with youth.

The Wolves’ three leading scorers are sophomore Zora Fray Chinn, averaging 15.6 points per game, 6-foot-1 sophomore Savannah Henderson (13.0), and junior guard Jourdan Avery (11.6). Senior point guard Geovanna Rios is averaging 7.3 points, 5.5 rebounds and 5.1 assists.

Boone’s leading scorers are junior Maddy Morales, averaging 16.2 points per game, 6-foot-1 senior Julianna Fowler (12.0) and junior guard Aubrey Phillips (10.2). Senior guard Alexandria Lemmon is averaging 9.0 points, 4.2 rebounds and 2.3 steals.

Both Boone and Timber Creek are 2-0 in 9A, District 4 play.

NCAA volleyball champs: The University of Tampa’s 2018 NCAA Division II national volleyball title team banked on talent groomed in Central Florida.

Deltona Pine Ridge alum Sorrel Houghton had a team-best 17 kills and eight blocks in the Spartans fiveset championsh­ip match win over Western Washington.

Apopka grad Nicole Dominguez contribute­d a team-high 21 digs. Lake Mary’s Melissa Elias added 15 digs and 13 assists for the Spartans (33-4).

Houghton, a sophomore who earned first team AllSunshin­e State Conference honors, ranked second for the Spartans in kills for the season with 489. Dominguez, a junior, led Tampa in digs (593). Elias, a sophomore, ranked second in assists (256).

The Sunshine State Conference player of the year was Florida Southern’s Nicole Mattson, a Hagerty product. The AllSSC Newcomer Team included St. Leo freshman Cassandra Kamien (Oak Ridge).
