There were only two other times that Warren Sapp smiled this big. The day he hoisted the Super Bowl trophy with the Tampa Bay Bucs and the day he donned the gold jacket as he was welcomed into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Big Warren was grinning from ear-to-ear Wednesday as he watched his son, Warren Sapp II, pledge to play at Florida Atlantic University. It was exactly 28 years ago to the day the elder Sapp signed to play with Miami out of Apopka High.

“Twenty-eight years ago today I signed [with] … Miami … Feb. 6th, 1991. Me and my mom was at the Village Inn up in Apopka, so full circle for me,” Warren Sapp said. “I’m just glad he’s happy. He found a place where he wants to go to school and get in there and play a little ball.”

Warren Sapp II, who is referred to as Deuce by his family, picked the Owls over numerous different schools, one in particular being UCF, because he loved everything about his visit he took this past weekend. The young Sapp, who doesn’t say much, was happy to get the recruiting process completed.

“The school, the facility … I like the school. Boca is beautiful,” Sapp said. “I like the coaches down there too.”

Jamiko Sapp, Warren Sapp II’s mother, was elated for her son on his big day.

“It’s just nice to see all of his hard work pay off. I’m extremely happy for him and proud of him,” she said.

The Sapp parents have always let Warren Sapp II forge his own path. He started out as a lacrosse player.

“I’m proud of him for owning who he is and not trying to imitate someone else, not trying to be someone else,” Jamiko Sapp said. “He’s really owned becoming his own young man … and that’s just a testament to who he is.”

Sapp, who according to his Foundation Academy head coach Brad Lord led the state in sacks this past season with 24, will be a blueshirt at FAU, which means he will pay for his first year and then be on scholarship.
