Hagerty knocks out No. 1 Olympia

- Orlando Sentinel staff report

Kelvin Zinck scored the tying goal and then buried the clincher in a shootout as Hagerty outlasted host Olympia 5-3 in a penalty-kicks tiebreaker after the two powers played to a 1-1 tie in regulation and overtime in their Class 5A, Region 1 boys soccer quarterfinal on Wednesday night.

Hagerty advances to a region semifinal for the first time in program history. The Huskies will play at district rival Lake Mary (20-5-1) on Saturday night. The Rams won 1-0 against visiting West Orange (12-3-2) on a goal by Nazar Tsaruk.

In the shootout, every Hagerty shooter converted his shot while Huskies goalkeeper Abdul Muqeet saved Olympia’s first attempt to clinch the victory. Olympia, which was ranked No. 1 in the Sentinel Super Six area rankings, finishes 16-3-3.

Winter Park (13-2-1) will host Plant City on Saturday night in another 5A region semifinal.

In 4A, Windermere (18-2-1) won 3-1 against visiting Viera. The Wolverines will play at Melbourne on Saturday. Lynn Ramsey

Celebration advances: Fernando Abreau scored twice to lead area No. 2 Celebration to a 4-2 win over Jupiter in a Class 5A, Region 3 quarterfinal.

The Storm (19-1-2) dominated the first 50 minutes, using goals by Nicola Romano, Mathis Machado and Abreau to take a 3-0 lead.

But Jupiter (12-5-2) scored twice in a span of 34 seconds to close the gap to 3-2 with 24 minutes remaining.

Jupiter just missed tying the game on a wide-open shot with seven minutes to go. The Storm would regain control moments later when Abreau added his second goal of the game on a counter attack.

“Not staying focused after getting a lead has been an issue with this team all season, and we're fortunate Jupiter missed that wide-open net that should have tied the game,” Celebration coach Chad Boudreaux said of his team, which is ranked No. 2 in the Super Six. “Frankly, we are a tired team right now. With three games last week and coming back tonight, our legs just gave out in the second half. We obviously need to get some rest because it doesn't get any easier with another game on Saturday.”

Celebration will host district foe Lakeland George Jenkins (15-3-2) in Saturday night’s semifinal.

It took overtime for the Storm to win 3-1 against Jenkins in last week's District 9 championship game J. Daniel Pearson

Elsewhere: Jonan Berrios had two goals and two assists as No. 4 Bishop Moore (26-3) rolled to a 5-1 home win over West Shore (15-3-2). The Hornets will host Saturday’s rematch of their district final against Lake Highland Prep (12-3-2), which won 3-2 at Melbourne Central Catholic. In Class 1A, Foundation Academy (15-2-1) will host Orangewood Christian (13-3) on Saturday.
