Padres: 3B Manny Machado sat out Tuesday night’s game against the Giants after Major League Baseball denied his appeal of a one-game suspension for “aggressively arguing and making contact” with umpire Bill Welke. In the Padres’ June 15 game against the Rockies, Machado was ejected for protesting a called third strike and approached Welke to continue the argument. Video shows Welke pointing to his arm early in the exchange, though there is no clear evidence of contact.

Yankees: 1B Luke Voit was put on the injured list after straining his abdomen against the Red Sox last weekend. He is the Yankees’ 21st player to go on the injured list this season, one more than last year. Voit was batting .280 with 17 homers and 50 RBIs. INF Mike Ford and LHP Nestor Cortes Jr. were recalled from the minors . ... John Sterling’s streak of calling every Yankees game since 1989 will end Thursday — his 81st birthday. Feeling a little run down, the team’s radio play-byplay announcer will finally take a breather this weekend when the Yankees play a four-game series in Tampa Bay. Sterling has worked 5,059 consecutive Yankees games — including the postseason, according to the team.

Cubs: An MRI confirmed that LHP Cole Hamels suffered a left oblique strain, but the injury isn’t expected to sideline him for as long as a similar injury to his right side two years ago. The injury likely will sideline Hamels through at least July . ... The team activated RHP Kyle Hendricks (shoulder) from the injured list, clearing him to start against the Pirates. Mets: LHP Steven Matz is moving to the bullpen for now as the Mets again overhaul a major problem area with a flurry of roster moves. The team reinstated veteran relievers Jeurys Familia, Justin Wilson and Luis Avilan from the injured list before Tuesday night’s Subway Series opener against the Yankees at Citi Field. The bullpen began the day leading the majors with 21 blown saves in 40 chances, ranked second with 19 losses and was 28th in ERA at 5.64.

Rangers: Slugger Joey Gallo will not participate in the Home Run Derby and two of his teammates might not be able to play in the All-Star Game. AL starting DH Hunter Pence re-aggravated a right groin strain while on a rehab assignment. LHP Mike Minor is set to start Sunday, and would be ineligible to pitch for the AL. Royals: The team recalled SS Adalberto Mondesi from a minor league rehab stint and RHP Jake Newberry from Triple-A Omaha. Mondesi, 23, had been sidelined since June 19 with a right groin strain. He leads the majors in stolen bases with 27 and triples with eight.

Orioles: The team optioned RHP Tom Eshelman to Triple-A Norfolk one day after he went five solid innings in his major-league debut. Eshelman allowed two runs and six hits Monday night against the Rays. The Orioles purchased the contract of RHP Asher Wojciechowski from Norfolk to start Tuesday.
