AROUND THE HORN

-

Angels:

In the week since being knocked unconscious in a home plate collision in Houston, catcher Jonathan Lucroy has walked around sporting a shiner and spoken as though plagued by a cold. He will address one issue Tuesday. He is scheduled to undergo a closed reduction surgery on his broken nose, an injury sustained when he tried to prevent the Astros’ Jake Marisnick from scoring July 7. Lucroy was also concussed on the hit, which sent him to a hospital. Lucroy’s recovery from the readjustment and the concussion could keep him out of the Angels’ lineup for three weeks, manager Brad Ausmus said.

Royals:

The Royals are planning and expecting to extend the protective netting around Kauffman Stadium to better protect fans, perhaps as soon as this season. They began the process after a 2-year-old girl sustained a fractured skull from a foul ball in Houston in late May. The efforts take on an amplified urgency after a fan was hit and injured by a foul ball at Kauffman Stadium over the weekend. The timing of implementation depends on several factors, including specific design challenges and scheduling. The Royals were among the first clubs to act after MLB recommended teams add netting before the 2016 season. The league recommended protecting to the inner edges of the dugouts. The Royals went to the outside edges of dugouts, with the netting coming down at an angle. They also raised the netting behind home plate about eight feet.

Tigers:

The team bought the contract of pitcher Trevor Rosenthal from Triple-A Toledo. The right-hander was released by the Nationals last month after going 0-1 with a 22.74 ERA in 12 appearances. He allowed 16 earned runs and eight hits with 15 walks in 61⁄3 innings. Rosenthal missed all of last season because of elbow surgery and signed with Washington in November. Detroit signed Rosenthal to a minor league contract June 29. He had no record in six games at Toledo, allowing six runs and eight hits in 51⁄3 innings. Rosenthal made the NL All-Star team in 2015 when he saved 48 games for St. Louis. He had 45 saves in 2014. The Tigers optioned left-hander Gregory Soto to Toledo.

Extra innings:

Mets pitcher Zack Wheeler has been placed on the 10-day injured list because of shoulder fatigue, which could complicate efforts by the out-of-contention team to trade the right-hander before the July 31 deadline. New York made the move retroactive to Friday, and Wheeler will be eligible to be activated July 22. Wheeler last started July 7 and the Mets said Monday the injury was discovered following the All-Star break. Steven Matz will replace Wheeler for Tuesday’s series opener at Minnesota. Wheeler is 6-6 with a 4.69 ERA in 19 starts this season . ... The Red Sox have designated infielder Eduardo Nunez for assignment, likely ending his tenure with the team he helped win the World Series last year. Nunez was batting .228 in 60 games with Boston this season, his third in the organization.
