Whitley’s Aldrin article took off

David Whitley’s article on Buzz Aldrin (“Aldrin’s long, strange trip after Apollo 11,” July 17) was excellent. He can write a good article. Last week (“Doubters still think mission was fake,” July 7), his article left you with the impression that the Apollo moon shot was a hoax. Nine out of 10 paragraphs on people saying it is a hoax tends to leave you believing the author thinks it is a hoax. The article on Buzz was full of entertaining facts that I learned. I think he really did go to the moon. Orlando

From a Muslim-American patriot

President Trump directed a comment to four Congresswomen of color saying, “If you’re not happy in the U.S., if you’re complaining all the time, you can leave, you can leave right now” (“Trump digs in on racist tweets,” July 16).

I am a Muslim-American woman who has always appreciated this land’s freedom and security. My faith teaches me patriotism which instills in me the desire to see my country progress towards a brighter future for all Americans. Speaking out against the conditions inside detention camps at the Mexican-American border, supporting a better health care system, a cleaner environment, and a quality education system does not indicate that I am not “happy in the U.S.” but that I recognize our nation’s value and wish to see it prosper for generations to come.

I would like to thank the president for giving me permission to leave the country. However, I have learned from the Prophet Muhammad that, “Love for one’s nation is a part of faith.” Thus, I will gladly stay in my country, the United States of America, and work alongside fellow Americans to ensure the greatness of the American Dream under the stars and stripes.

Disney shouldn’t spoil ‘Lion King’

Orlando

This time Disney has crossed the line (“Pretty copycat has no place in the circle of life,” July 19). Its release on the socalled “upgraded” live-action version of “The Lion King” has proven that it has done the unthinkable — it has dared to intervene with a tamper-proof animated classic. Take warning, Disney: where animated feature films are concerned, you are losing your touch. You are in danger of losing your magic — if you haven’t already! Orlando

Medicare for All is the best answer

In her article (“Employer-sponsored health insurance should be fired,” July 17), Sally Pipes brings out some valid issues such as reluctance to change jobs for fear of losing insurance. However, she continues to suggest that employers give the money to the employee to purchase health insurance thereby giving the employee a choice.

All well and good. But this does not address the health-care crisis in this country. Millions of Americans who do not receive health insurance from their employer, those who because of longterm illness and inability to work have lost their health coverage at the worst possible time, and those who are between jobs or unemployed still would not have health insurance coverage.

Only removing health insurance from the employer and creating a government program such as Medicare for All will provide total coverage for everyone. This should be the goal. Private insurance would then provide supplemental coverage and the employers willing to provide this coverage as a benefit to their employees can pay for such a plan.

Such a program can be created slowly by allowing younger people to buy into Medicare. Adding younger people who spend less on health care should improve Medicare's stability. Whatever plan is established, the goal should be 100% of Americans covered by health insurance.
