Gators picked 2nd in SEC East; top honors for Henderson, Zuniga

- By Edgar Thompson

GAINESVILLE – SEC media members picked the Florida Gators to finish second to Georgia in the East this coming season.

But a season after being picked third behind the Bulldogs and South Carolina, coach Dan Mullen’s team is closing the gap on the rival Bulldogs. UF received 21 first-place votes, up from four a season ago. Georgia received 233 first-place votes.

The Gators return five starters on offense and seven on defense from a 10-3 team that ended 2018 with four straight wins.

One media member even picked the Gators to win the SEC title, but Tennessee, Mississippi State, Auburn and South Carolina also received a vote. Defending champion Alabama, once again, was the runaway pick, earning 203 votes while Georgia received 49.

The Crimson Tide is picked to win the SEC West over LSU.

Gators cornerback C.J. Henderson and defensive end Jabari Zuniga were named to the firstteam preseason All-SEC team. Linebacker David Reese, tailback Lamical Perine and punter Tommy Townsend were named second-team while kicker Evan McPherson was a third-team selection.
