A: Summer weather can help you establish new sod, but not in the shady areas. Sod in the full sun can benefit from the frequent rains, and you probably won’t have to do as much watering. Avoid adding new sod to shady spots as these dry slowly and can easily be over-watered. Sod sunny areas now but delay adding new turf to the shady spots until fall, when you are more in control of the water. easy to root, but the best way to grow more plants is with a more traditional approach. Fill a number of small pots with a loose soil mix and thoroughly moisten. Then make cuttings six to eight inches long from the tips of stems and stick the cut ends two or more inches into the filled containers.

Moisten again and move the containers with cuttings to a shady spot. Surround the containers with clear plastic along the sides and over the top. Mist the plants several times a day. Rooting should occur in four to six weeks, at which time the plants can be moved to filtered sun. Keep moist and fertilizer until it is the size needed for the landscape.

A: Now is the time to break out the pruners and help strengthen your flourishing bush. We normally do limited pruning with gardenias, but you can start by cutting back the weaker shoots a foot or more. Some may have to be removed back to branch angles or the trunk. Next, thin out the smaller shoots and eliminate crisscrossing branches. Give your plant a summer feeding with a slow-release fertilizer, keep the soil moist and renew a light mulch to help this gardenia grow sturdy new shoots.
