Things To Do

Choosing the best charity to support is sometimes a dilemma. Fortunately, this week has several philanthropic options, starting with one that’s hard to deny.

The will celebrate the 100th adoption for the Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando’s Dog in Residence Program at Aloft Downtown Orlando (3-7 p.m. Saturday, 500 S. Orange Ave., free, petallianceorlando.org).

For the past year, pups have been on display in the hotel, and now the public is invited to drink in the success of the program with a puppy costume contest, Hawaiian music, food, drinks and more.

Parents looking to occupy their own cubs for an afternoon can also contribute to the Horizon West Theater Company with a special screening of

(9 a.m. Wednesday, Cinépolis Luxury Cinema - Hamlin, 14111 Shoreside Way, Winter Garden, $20, horizonwesttheatercompany.com). The event will include snacks, a sing-along, a roaring contest and wild photo ops.

Fearless films

Speaking of movies, cinephiles looking for something new can find some truly original works at

(8 p.m. Saturday, CityArts, 39 S. Magnolia Ave., Orlando, free, facebook.com). The event will feature a Q&A and short films from national talents.

This will be part of the Sunspots series celebrating films as art. And may I say, as a fan of the venue, it’s good to see the new CityArts diving back into film with events such as this and next month’s Sick ‘N’ Wrong Film Festival.

If the name of that festival intrigues you, you can get a taste of what to expect at (7 p.m. Thursday, The Nook, 2432 E. Robinson St., Orlando, free, facebook.com). Festival creator Stephen Stull will screen a few entries from previous years. Absolutely not for the faint of stomach.

Spoken words

Also at The Nook this week, poetry fans can catch spoken word artist and musician

(6 p.m. Saturday, free A veteran of New York’s experimental jazz scene, Riott has earned a reputation as a provocateur.

For more poetic enchantment, head over to the

(7 p.m. Sunday, Cleopatra Hookah Lounge, 7733 Turkey Lake Road, Orlando, $10, meetup.com). The recurring night is observing four years of poetry and music from local artists.

As for me, I’ll do what I always do: Keep reading my “Little Mermaid” fan fic at everyone I see at Disney in hopes they hire me to work on the remake.
