Second victim dies in east Orlando apartment shooting
A second victim has died from injuries suffered in a shooting at an Orlando apartment complex last week, police said.
Fabio Rodriguez, 68, was hospitalized after the Wednesday shooting at the Mill Creek Apartments on Commander Drive, where he worked. He died Sunday at Orlando Regional Medical Center, police said.
The accused shooter, 56-year-old Pedro MartinezJurado, suffered a bullet wound to his neck and remains in custody at the same hospital. Court paperwork was unclear as to who fired the shot that wounded him. He faces charges of first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder.
A second worker who was also shot, 40-year-old Julian Valencia Correa, told police that Martinez-Jurado’s gun seemed to jam during the attack, possibly allowing Rodriguez to survive.
The workers were inside a maintenance shop within the complex’s clubhouse when Valencia Correa said Martinez-Jurado opened fire at them. Both men were wounded multiple times, according to a police report, which said the workers fled and took shelter in an office.
Officers searched Martinez-Jurado’s apartment, finding the body of his wife, 61-year-old Enma Idalia Contreras Cordero.
Police have not revealed a motive for the killings.
Rodriguez was well liked by apartment residents, who knew him by his kindness and warm demeanor.
“He went above and beyond to help residents,” resident Melmarits Avila said. “Everyone I’ve spoken to is heartbroken. None of us can understand why him.”
