Niners lose Bosa to ankle injury

-

Nick Bosa’s debut for the 49ers is on hold until the regular season, and uncertainty now looms whether the rookie defensive end will be healthy for the September 8 opener against the Buccaneers.

“We’re hoping for Week 1. We think he has a good chance but can’t guarantee,” coach Kyle Shanahan said Thursday.

Shanahan termed it a “serious” ankle injury that could have been worse, adding that the team’s initial reaction was of a potential season-ender.

“We’re going to be very prudent,” GM John Lynch said. “The great thing I can tell you about Nick Bosa, is he’s been dominating practice out here on a daily basis.

“He’s a game-changing type player, everything we hoped and expected, and we have to get him right.”

Bosa will miss the preseason after going down in Wednesday’s practice.

The No. 2 overall draft pick out of Ohio State missed all but three games last year with a coremuscle injury.

Quinn gets 2-game ban: Cowboys defensive end Robert Quinn was suspended for the first two games of the regular season for violating the league’s ban on performance enhancers.

Quinn was acquired in an offseason trade with the Dolphins. The league said Thursday the ninthyear player is eligible to practice and play in preseason games, but he already was out until the regular season after breaking his left hand in practice at training camp.

The 29-year-old Quinn will be eligible to return in Week 3 at home against the Dolphins.

Quinn’s agent, Sean Kiernan, said in a statement released on Twitter he was “extremely disappointed” in the NFL’s decision to suspend Quinn.

Kiernan said Quinn takes medication to control seizures. The agent said it is believed Quinn’s medication was contaminated with probenecid when a prescription was filled at a pharmacy. Probenecid was used as a masking agent for steroids in the 1980s and ’90s, Kiernan said, but is used now as a prescription drug to treat gout. Kiernan said records showed that a prescription for probenecid was filled before Quinn’s prescription at the pharmacy he uses.

Quinn has 69 sacks in eight seasons.

Jackson carted off: The Raiders are concerned about the status of starting right guard Gabe Jackson after he injured his leg in a joint practice with the Rams on Thursday.

Jackson went down when someone rolled into his leg. He was then taken off the field on a cart.

Coach Jon Gruden said that he didn’t want to speculate on the injury but acknowledged he’s “really concerned.”

Extra points: The Texans acquired RB Duke Johnson from the Browns for a conditional 2020 draft pick that could be a third-round pick, ESPN reported. Johnson, 25, ran for 1,286 yards, caught 235 passes for 2,170 yards and scored 13 total TDs in four seasons . ... The Chiefs and CB Morris Claiborne agreed to a contract, according to reports. Claiborne, 29, who played the last two seasons for the Jets, won’t be able to play until the fifth game of the regular season because he’s suspended four games for a violation of the league’s substance abuse policy.
