UF, UM in talks for a home series
GAINESVILLE – The long-awaited Florida versus Miami game on Aug. 24 in Orlando may not be the last time the Gators and Hurricanes meet on the football field during the coming years, the Orlando Sentinel has learned.
The two schools are in discussions and may soon announce a home-andhome series to begin in the near future, according to a source with knowledge of the negotiations.
UF released its 2020 schedule last week and will face USF during the 2021 season in Tampa’s Raymond James Stadium and 2022 in Gainesville. This leaves 2023 as a logical starting point for a Gators-‘Canes series to begin. UF also is scheduled to host USF in 2025 as part of a 2-for-1 series with the Bulls.
Scheduling Miami would be another example of the continued effort by UF to upgrade its nonconference schedule. The Gators have future homeand-home series with Colorado (2028, 2029) and Texas (2030, 2031).
But the Hurricanes are more natural rivals with a shared history with the Gators. The schools used to face off regularly on the gridiron, playing every season from 1938 to 1987 other than during World War II.
UF and Miami have played each other during the regular season just three times since 2003, adding intrigue to next weekend’s matchup at Camping World Stadium.
Miami holds a 29–26 edge in the series, having won seven of the past eight meetings, including a 21–16 victory in 2013. Ranked No. 8 in the preseason coaches poll and coming off a 10-3 season, the Gators are seven-point favorites next week.
