Sorority found guilty of violations
Members of a UCF sorority broke 11 rules for university organizations, including having fraudulent IDs, selling course material and being under the influence of alcohol, the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities found.
Last month, a member reported a string of group chat messages in which her Alpha Delta Pi sisters mentioned drinking, sharing IDs and paying others to complete assignments and included a photo of a person lying next to a toilet, documents from the university showed. The University of Central Florida placed the sorority on interim suspension, a temporary status, while investigating
the accusations.
The university found the sorority was in violation of 11 of the 16 rules it was accused of breaking, according to a letter Wednesday to Alpha Delta Pi members. It will be suspended for the fall 2019 semester, which means the sorority can’t participate in university events or participate in offcampus events, intramurals, socials or mixers.
“We’re grateful that UCF joins us in prioritizing our members’ wellness above all, and taking facts as seriously as they do allegations by clearing the chapter on several fronts,” said Amanda Sloan, the executive director of Alpha Delta Pi’s national organization, in an statement emailed to the Orlando Sentinel. “We will use fall semester as an opportunity to focus on values, sisterhood, and accountability, and look forward to seeing the chapter grow from this adversity.”
Alpha Delta Pi must present a revised member education plan that includes expectations for alcohol use and academic integrity to the university, create new communications protocol and produce a video or presentation “highlighting the importance of understanding and upholding institution policies.” If it doesn’t complete these requirements by Nov. 29, it may face a longer suspension.
Documents obtained from UCF through a public records request show pages of text messages going back to October that included members discussing drinking, exchanging IDs and asking others to complete class assignments for them in exchange for money.
The thread includes several photos depicting a person lying beside a toilet, young women holding glasses of wine and a Florida ID card with the caption “selling this.”
The messages also include lyrics to a song about other sororities, including one group whose members are “all a waste of life, trying to be a trophy wife.”
