Pats’ Chung indicted on drug charge
Patriots safety Patrick Chung WAS indicted in New Hampshire on a charge of cocaine possession, according to court paperwork released Thursday.
A Belknap County grand jury indicted Chung, 32, on Aug. 8.
Members of the Meredith, New Hampshire, police department were called to Chung’s residence June 25 “on a call for service” and obtained evidence leading to the felony drug charge, Belknap County Attorney Andrew Livernois said in a statement.
Livernois declined to provide additional details on the case.
Chung’s arraignment is scheduled for Wednesday.
It’s not clear whether Chung has an attorney who can speak for him. The court file doesn’t list one.
“We are aware of the reports regarding Patrick Chung,” the Patriots tweeted. “We will not be commenting while his judicial proceedings take place.”
The NFL also said it was monitoring developments.
Chung, 32, could face possible suspension without pay for up to four games for a first-time offense.
Newton exits with injury: Panthers quarterback Cam Newton left Thursday night’s preseason game against the Patriots in the first quarter with a foot injury.
The team announced that he wouldn’t return.
The 2015 MVP was playing for the first time since Dec. 17, when the team shut him down for the last two games of the season because of shoulder fatigue that prevented him from throwing downfield. He had arthroscopic surgery in January and didn’t play in the first two preseason games.
Newton appeared to be injured when he was sacked for a loss of 8 yards by Adam Butler on a thirdand-10 from the Panthers 31.
Field shortened: The Raiders and Packers played their preseason game in Winnipeg, Manitoba on a shortened field out of concern for the safety of the field.
The game Thursday night was played on an 80-yard field with the goal lines starting at the 10-yard lines and no kickoffs. Teams received the ball at their 15, which was located at the normal 25.
The league said the field passed inspection Wednesday, but both teams had concerns about the condition of the end zones, where the goal posts for CFL games usually were located. Instead there were holes in the end zones.
That led to the decision to shorten the field.
Both teams held out almost all of their starters.
Cards, Crabtree agree to deal: Veteran receiver Michael Crabtree, who turns 32 next month, agreed to terms on a one-year contract with the Cardinals late Wednesday night, more than two weeks after he tried out for the team during training camp.
Crabtree, who turns 32 next month, caught 54 passes for 670 yards with three TDs last season for the Ravens.
