3 strategies to give your closet an autumn refresh

- By Aramide Esubi

The fall breezes are finally blowing through, which can only mean one thing: pumpkin spice lattes! Or you can use the change in season to sit back and reflect on your goals for the end of the year and beyond.

Are you buckling down to take your career someplace new? Do you want to spend a little more time focusing on your relationships? Are you looking inward? Your wardrobe should reflect the plans you have for yourself.

As 2019 winds down and we prepare to “fall back” in a few weeks, I’m going to give you three ways to push your wardrobe forward, depending on what you’re hoping to achieve.

Softening up?

Maybe you’ve got your personal style on lock but are searching for a little more balance this year. Why not add some cozy, feminine layers to soften your look up?

Nothing says approachable like a flowy, floral skirt (try balancing it out with some suede booties), and I’m also loving the floral printed pants I’m seeing lately. Just because it’s not spring or summer doesn’t mean your outfits can’t blossom.

If you’re looking for something less structured but still stylin’, take a neutral-hued poncho for a spin this fall. Guys can soften up by adding a little more texture to their jackets (think corduroy or tweed) or pulling out a cashmere hoodie.

Stepping it up?

If you’ve been giving 110% at work this year but feel like your work life still needs a punch-up, perhaps you need to put a little more attention toward what you’re wearing on the job.

Your wardrobe should reflect the busy, creative, productive, smart and overall awesome worker you are. The quickest and easiest way to look more profesh is to add a little structure to your outfit.

Adding a tailored jacket, vest or skirt to your work wardrobe will make you look polished and comfy even if you don’t have a super buttoned-up workplace. The cooler weather also allows you to wear more closely fitted pieces without discomfort. Be sure to look for fall-friendly colors like camel, green, and deep cranberry to add to your workwear mix.

Simplifying your life?

Perhaps the change in season inspires your “out with the old” mentality. I love going through last year’s winter clothes and ditching the pieces that no longer reflect my current style, or that I’m just plain tired of. As you purge this season, pay close attention to how you might be able to repurpose your “out-of-season” pieces before you toss them.

Maybe you can layer a turtleneck under that dress or embellished top to give it some new life, or perhaps your summer tunic looks autumn chic with a pair of tights underneath. Use your closet sort as a time to take stock and see how your favorite outfits can shift with the season!

While New Year’s is usually the time for resolutions, all your plans don’t need to wait until Jan. 1. Start making small changes to your look now and get a head start on your next year of fierce fashion.
