IN BRIEF Celtics’ Brown gets 4-year extension

The Celtics signed forward Jaylen Brown to a four-year contract extension which could pay him as much as $115 million, a person familiar with the negotiatio­ns told the Associated Press.

The total includes incentives, according to the person who spoke on the condition of anonymity because terms of the deal were not announced. The extension was first reported by ESPN.

The third overall pick in the 2016 draft, Brown has averaged 11.2 points and four rebounds in three seasons.

■ The Knicks exercised their contract options on G Frank Ntilikina, G Dennis Smith Jr. and F Kevin Knox . ... The Nets signed F Taurean Prince to a multiyear contract extension, just a few months after acquiring him in an offseason trade . ... Fourth-year G Buddy Hield agreed to a multiyear contract extension with the Kings . ... Dallas police say one man has been arrested and a second suspect was being sought in last month’s slaying of former NBA and Texas Tech standout Andre Emmett. WFAA-TV reports Keith Johnson, 32, was being held on a capital murder charge with bond set at $500,000.

College basketball:

Michigan State is No. 1 in the AP Top 25 preseason poll for the first time in program history. The Spartans were the overwhelmi­ng choice with their veteran returnees led by star Cassius Winston. They topped 60 of 65 ballots, easily outdistanc­ing No. 2 Kentucky and No. 3 Kansas as the only other teams to receive first-place votes. Duke was fourth, followed by Louisville, Florida, Maryland, Gonzaga, North Carolina and Villanova to round out the top 10 . ... Michigan freshman F Franz Wagner is expected to miss four to six weeks with a fractured right wrist.

College football:

Former Miami coach Mark Richt, 59, survived a major scare after suffering a heart attack on Monday morning, according to a post he made on social media. Richt, a college football analyst for ACC Network, abruptly retired on Dec. 30 just three days after the Hurricanes’ 35-3 loss to Wisconsin in the Pinstripe Bowl.

Golf:

Jason Day won the inaugural “The Challenge: Japan Skins” game, beating Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and Hideki Matsuyama in Inzai City, Japan. Day won eight skins and $210,000. Woods had five skins and $60,000 with McIlroy taking four and winning $60,000. Matsuyama won only one skin and $20,000.

Soccer:

Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Virgil van Dijk are among the top cotenders announced for the 2019 Ballon d’Or award . ... Major League Soccer has awarded its 29th franchise to Sacramento, which will start play in 2022.

Tennis:

Kei Nishikori, the 2014 U.S. Open runner-up, will have season-ending surgery on his right elbow and is aiming to be ready to go for the start of 2020.
