Michigan State’s Cassius Winston was the only consensus selection on the Associated Press preseason All-America team announced Tuesday, a day after the Spartans were ranked No. 1 in the AP preseason poll.

The 6-1 guard averaged 18.8 points and 7.5 assists as a junior, leading the Spartans to the Final Four for the eighth time under coach Tom Izzo.

Winston is joined by high-scoring Marquette senior guard Markus Howard, Louisville junior forward Jordan Nwora, Seton Hall senior guard Myles Powell and Memphis freshman James Wiseman on the five-player team.

■ Michigan State G Joshua Langford had a setback in his return from a foot injury, and Izzo said the senior will be re-evaluated in January. Langford played only 13 games last season, averaging 15 points . ... Dallas police have arrested a second suspect in the investigat­ion of last month’s fatal shooting of ex-NBA and Texas Tech star Andre Emmett. Dallas County jail records show Michael Lucky, 29, was being held on a capital murder charge. Online records didn’t immediatel­y list an attorney representi­ng Lucky, who surrendere­d Monday.

Baseball: Joe Girardi left Citizens Bank Park on Monday night as the favorite to be the next Phillies manager after an all-day interview, as the team nears a decision. Girardi, according to a source, emerged as the “leading candidate” for the job after the Phillies conducted follow-up interviews over the last few days with Girardi, Buck Showalter and Dusty Baker. Girardi has not managed since 2017, when he finished a decade-long run with the Yankees . ... The Phillies hired Brian Barber to be director of amateur scouting. Barber spent the last 18 seasons with the Yankees.

College football: Wake Forest leading tackler Justin Strnad is out for the season with a ruptured bicep tendon. The team says the linebacker had surgery three days after he was injured in a 22-20 victory over Florida State.

Soccer: Cristiano Ronaldo’s lawyers have filed court documents asking a U.S. judge in Las Vegas to either dismiss a Nevada woman’s lawsuit alleging the soccer star raped her in 2009, or to order closed-door settlement talks. Attorneys representi­ng Ronaldo’s accuser, Kathryn Mayorga, did not immediatel­y respond to telephone, email and text messages seeking comment about the two recent court filings about her lawsuit stemming from a 2010 confidenti­ality agreement and $375,000 hush-money payment . ... Real Madrid took a big step toward salvaging its Champions League campaign with a 1-0 win over Galatasara­y. Eden Hazard set up Toni Kroos for the winning goal in the 18th minute. The win lifts Madrid into second place in Group A behind Paris Saint-Germain and two points clear of third-placed Club Brugge.
