Disney-spoofing ‘Disenchanted!’ gets cast album — with Orlando voices
“Disenchanted!” — the Disney-spoofing musical that got its start at the Orlando Fringe Festival, made it off-Broadway and now is performed around the world — at last has a cast album.
Recorded this summer in New York City, the “Disenchanted!” album is part of the 10th-anniversary celebration of the women-empowering musical, which sees storybook princesses taking back their identities from the Disneyfied cartoon versions.
Fittingly, for a show born in Central Florida, the recording features two Orlando actresses — Andrea Canny and Michelle Knight. Each has a long history with the production: Knight played Snow White in the original cast and starred in the offBroadway production. Canny has played Belle of “Beauty and the Beast” and the Little Mermaid; in addition, she introduced the creators to New York producers, paving the way for the show’s off-Broadway appearances.
“Fiely and I never thought that any of these things would happen to us: two Off-Broadway runs of ‘Disenchanted!,’ a North American tour, the show being licensed on five continents in numerous different languages, a worldwide sorority of princesses,” said Dennis Giacino, who created the show with his partner, Fiely Matias. “It’s all a magical dream for us.”
Central Florida connections remain at the heart of the show, said Giacino, citing “the Orlando Fringe that gave us our start, the audiences, investors, producers
