WFTV looks at the Daytona Tortugas: Can team be saved?

On “Central Florida Spotlight,” Greg Warmoth explores the possible elimination of the Daytona Tortugas team from Major League Baseball’s minor league system. The program airs at 12:30 p.m. Sunday on WFTV-Channel 9. Daytona is one of 42 cities on MLB’s “contraction” list for 2021. The Tortugas stadium is named for Jackie Robinson, who played the first integrated MLB spring training game there in 1946. WFTV sports anchor Christian Bruey discusses MLB’s announcement and explains the controversy over consolidation measures. Ryan Keur, the Tortugas’ president, talks about the team’s strong support in the Daytona and Volusia communities, efforts to save the team and the goal of maintaining a regular presence in the historic ballpark. The show offers footage of Robinson playing there in 1946.
Visit Orlando CEO George Aguel is Ryan Elijah’s guest on “Orlando Matters” at 6:30 a.m. Saturday on WOFLChannel 35. (Note the early start because of football.) Aguel will talk about recent tourism trends and his trip to London to market the city. Local businessman Eric Holm looks at the current Orlando business economy and the impact of a $15 minimum wage. Holm owns 33 Golden Corrals in Florida. (The Sentinel has a content-sharing agreement with WOFL.)
Capt. Ken Chapman from the Salvation Army discusses the Angel Tree campaign on “The Weekly on ClickOrlando.com” at 8 a.m. Sunday on WKMG-Channel 6. Justin Warmoth talks to Chapman about the campaign’s goal of helping 4,000 children and seniors this holiday season. Each angel tag has a person’s name, age, wish list and needs list. Chapman highlights the families in need and how the operation works.
State Sen. Janet Cruz, D-Tampa, will discuss the upcoming legislative session and amending the Florida constitution on
“Political Connections” at 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. Sunday on Spectrum News 13. Florida Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran
will discuss school safety, testing and choice. PolitiFact Truth-O-Meter will rate a claim by presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt. “In Focus with Allison Walker-Torres” features Florida House Speakerdesignate Chris Sprowls, R-Palm Harbor, at 11:30 a.m. and 8:30 p.m. Sunday on Spectrum News 13. He will discuss priorities in the upcoming legislative session and how he envisions moving Florida forward after he assumes the speaker role in November 2020.
“NewsNight” looks back at the top local stories of 2019 in science and space at 8:30 p.m. Friday on WUCF TV. Host Nancy Alvarez of WFTV welcomes Chabeli Herrera of the Orlando Sentinel and Brendan Byrne of 90.7 WMFE. They discuss this month’s report from the NASA inspector general on delays in the Commercial Crew Program. The panel looks at the most exciting discoveries in astronomy and the role Central Florida scientists are playing in the hunt for planets.
