Virginia beats rival, earns 1st trip to ACC title game

Quarterbac­k Bryce Perkins put up 475 yards of offense and had three total TDs, Brian Delaney kicked a go-ahead 48-yard field with 1:23 to play and Virginia added a key defensive score, beating Virginia Tech 39-30 in Charlottes­ville, Va.

The Cavaliers ended a 15-game skid in the rivalry and earned their first trip to the Atlantic Coast Conference championsh­ip game as the Coastal Division champion.

Virginia (9-3, 6-2) will face No. 3 and defending national champ Clemson for the title Dec. 7 in Charlotte, N.C.

The Hokies, No. 24 in the CFP rankings, fell to 8-4, 5-3.

■ Brady White threw for 233 yards and two TDs and No. 18 and host Memphis beat No. 19 Cincinnati 34-24 for the Tigers’ third straight American Athletic Conference West title and the right to host the league championsh­ip — and the Bearcats again — next week . ... QB Jaylon Henderson had three total TDs to lead No. 20 Boise State past host Colorado State 31-24. The Broncos finished unbeaten in the Mountain West Conference for the first time and will host Hawaii next week in the league title game.

College basketball: Isaiah Livers scored 21 points to lead Michigan over No. 8 Gonzaga 82-64 to win the Battle 4 Atlantis in Paradise Island, Bahamas. Jon Teske added 19 points and 15 rebounds for the Wolverines (7-0), who beat No. 6 UNC in the semifinals . ... All-American senior G Markus Howard scored 51 points to help Marquette rout USC 101-79 and advance to the Orlando Invitation­al championsh­ip game. It was the third career game of 50 points or more for Howard, who set a tournament record for the second straight game. The Golden Eagles (5-1) will face No. 5 Maryland in Sunday’s tournament final . ... Freshman Matthew Hurt scored 20 points to help No. 1 Duke (7-1) beat visiting Winthrop 83-70 to bounce back from its stunning OT loss to Stephen F. Austin on Tuesday. Freshman Cassius Stanley will miss at least one month after suffering a leg injury in the victory over Winthrop.

Golf: Former world No. 1 Jason Day of Australia withdrew from the Presidents Cup because of a back injury. Internatio­nal team captain Ernie Els replaced him with Byeong Hun An of South Korea. The Presidents Cup takes place Dec. 12-15 matches at Royal Melbourne in Australia . ... Pablo Larrazabal of Spain held a three-stroke lead over two players midway through the European Tour’s season-opening Alfred Dunhill Championsh­ip in Malelane, South Africa.

Also: Arsenal fired Unai Emery following its worst run in 27 years, and 18 months after the Spaniard succeeded Arsene Wenger as manager of the Premier League club. Arsenal has gone its last seven overall matches without a victory. Assistant and former player Freddie Ljungberg was named interim manager . ...
