Six puppies from the British Virgin Islands were found wandering the streets on New Year’s Eve. If a rescue didn’t step in to help, the litter would end up as “street dogs,” living a tough life.

Fortunately, Orlandobased Buddies for Life, Inc. offered assistance, and the now 12-week-old pups recently boarded a private jet to start their new lives in Florida.

“They’re very easygoing. I was impressed at how quiet they were when I got them, and they’re still really quiet. They sleep through the night,” said Patti Boyle, president of Buddies for Life.

She guesses the black puppies are boxer-Labrador mixes, while the brown ones are boxer-German Shepherd mixes. There are three males and three females; all are named for the British royal family: Harry, Kate, Charlotte, Harry, Meghan and Archie. Though, given recent events, Boyle joked that “we might have to remove Archie and Meghan and Harry.”

Since arriving on Jan. 18, they’ve been professionally groomed, updated on vaccinations and spayed/ neutered. Boyle said the vet noted the puppies have a good temperament and are easily restrained.

“You just put them on their back and you can rub their bellies,” Boyle said. “That shows that they’re willing to be trained. It’s easier to train them if they’re not resistant to that kind of restraint.”

The puppies get along great with other dogs and love people, but have had no exposure to children or cats, though Boyle said given their age, the pooches could easily adapt to a feline friend.

It costs $300 — which also includes a leash and collar — to take one of the puppies home.

Those interested in adopting should visit buddiesforlifeinc.com and fill out an application. If potential adopters are approved, the rescue will set up a meeting before proceeding with the adoption.
