Cops: Man drove 90 miles to abuse girl
28-year-old faces charges of lewd or lascivious battery, obscene communication
A man drove roughly 90 miles from his home north of Tampa to Ocoee, where he sexually abused a girl younger than 16 who he had met through Yubo, a social media network for teenagers and young adults, according to police.
Clayton Everett Colborn, 28, faces charges of lewd or lascivious battery and obscene communication. He was being held without bail at the Orange County Jail on Tuesday morning.
The investigation began about 2:25 a.m. Monday, when Ocoee police went to the Bob Sorenson Fields on Adair Street to investigate a report of a suspicious vehicle in the park. A caller had reported seeing two people leaving the vehicle and entering a bathroom.
When they arrived, officers found Colborn and the girl.
In an interview, the girl told detectives she had met Colborn, who she knew as Jason, through Yubo, an app and social media network designed for members of Generation Z. According to an arrest affidavit, the girl said she thought Colborn was 16 years old.
They had been trading messages through the app for several weeks before they met at Sorenson Fields in late January and again that night. They had sex both times, the girl said.
Colborn in an interview admitted making the approximately 90-minute trip from his home in Lutz, which is near Wesley Chapel and Land O’ Lakes, to meet the Ocoee girl. Colborn “stated he traveled far, trying to meet new people,” according to the affidavit.
Investigators said Colborn claimed Yubo was a dating app, users of which are supposed to be 18.
According to its website, Yubo, which launched in 2015 and has more than 25 million users, is an app for members to find friendships and is meant to be used by people between 13 and 25 years old.
Colborn would not answer when investigators asked him if he had performed the sex acts on the girl that she had described, the affidavit said. He was arrested on five second-degree felonies, each of which carries up to 15 years in state prison, court records show.
