Give hibiscus a fresh start before spring growth

Expect the same pests as would affect your traditiona­l tomato crop. give them a new home. Hyacinths with their attractive, white, pink or purple fragrant blooms need much more cold than Florida can provide. Also, forced bulbs require two or more years to recover, even when planted outdoors in an ideal climate. It sounds terrible and difficult for gardeners to do, but otherwise, just toss the plants and keep the containers. see what grows back but to be a bit more realistic, the weeds normally win out in the end. Save yourself a lot of grief and resod this area as spring growth begins. Then make sure the chinch bugs don’t creep in from the edges by applying a lawn insecticid­e around late March to ensure these pests are under control. Not all chinch bug controls continue to be effective. Consult a horticultu­rist at your local garden center to determine the best product.

February through early March is an ideal time to give this and other ornamental grasses a fresh start. Most can have all top growth removed to within a foot or less of the ground. This is also a good time to thin out the dead or declining portions. Wear long gloves and protective clothing, as most of these grasses have sharp edges. weed and feed all but zoysia and centipede lawns. These later turf types do not receive a spring treatment until they start to regreen which could be as late as mid-April. Make sure you apply a product made for your lawn type, following label instructio­ns. Lawns not receiving a weed and feed treatment but filling with weeds can be treated with a liquid or granular weed control product made for the lawn type, following label instructio­ns as to timing and product applicatio­n.

Let the harvest begin — onions planted from sets are normally ready when you are, as they seldom grow into the large, bulbing types. Onion sets are usually grown for scallions or the small onions eaten raw or cut into salads and soups. Large, bulbing types are usually grown from seeds or transplant­s. They too can be eaten at any time, but most are left in the ground until fully mature around the end of April or early May.
