BOYS BASKETBALL

At least one area team has won a Florida High School Athletic Association boys basketball state championship in 14 of the past 15 seasons. But that streak wouldn’t be what it is had Orlando Christian Prep not emerged as a small-school hoops powerhouse.

The Warriors on Friday won their eighth state title in a 13-year display of dominance. OCP broke open a tight game in the fourth quarter and beat Jacksonville Impact Christian 58-44 in the Class 2A final.

The only Orlando Christian Prep teams to win more games in a season were its 30-2 Class 1A title team of 2008-09 that featured former UCF standout Keith Clanton and the 30-1 Class 2A champ squad of 2013-14 that lost only to Greensboro Day School of North Carolina.

This season’s edition lost only once inside Florida. The Warriors were beaten 55-51 in their third regular-season game by Daytona Beach Mainland in a semifinal of Winter Park’s Rotary Tip-Off Classic. OCP won its final 20 games after losing 44-42 to New Jersey power St. Benedict’s Prep (30-4) in a game played in North Carolina.

Treig Burke has coached OCP to three state titles and a runner-up finish in four years as head coach. He was an assistant for the school’s first five title teams.

These are the final Sentinel Super 16 team rankings for the 2019-20 boys basketball season. The Super 16 is composed of Orlando area teams that participate in the FHSAA playoffs.
