Spring game postponed for Knights
AAC cancels all sports amid more coronavirus concerns
UCF is stopping spring football practice and has postponed its spring game indefinitely after the American Athletic Conference announced a sweeping stop in sports activities Monday to combat the spread of the coronavirus.
The AAC is canceling athletic competitions, including championships, for the remainder of the academic year.
UCF’s spring football game was scheduled for April 4.
Beyond football, the nationally ranked baseball, softball and tennis teams all saw their seasons come to a sudden finish. The Knights’ track and field and rowing teams also are consistent contenders for conference championships.
All will now stop play and observe Centers for Disease Control guidelines on social distancing.
The NCAA announced Thursday it had canceled all winter and spring sports championships, including the men’s and women’s NCAA basketball tournament. That news came on the heels of the cancellation of Division I men’s basketball last week.
The league followed that up by saying it was suspending all spring sports competition, but it left the door open to resuming play until Monday.
The end of the 2019-20 athletics season means UCF beats USF for the annual War on I-4 rivalry trophy. The Knights won the all-sports prize by a score of 36-9.
UCF officials have asked students to remain away from campus rather than return from spring break this week. Classes will be held online rather than in person.
