Clinton-Dix on the move, signs deal with Cowboys

-

The Dallas Cowboys have agreed to a deal with safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, adding a familiar name for new coach Mike McCarthy.

Clinton-Dix’s representatives, SportsTrust Advisors, announced the move early Friday on Twitter. The 27-year-old’s addition comes at a position the Cowboys have largely ignored in free agency and the draft in recent years.

Clinton-Dix was a star at Orlando Dr. Phillips High before winning a national championship at Alabama. He grew up in Eatonville and has frequently returned to the Orlando area to host football camps and help lead charitable events.

He has used his warm-up clothing and cleats to show love for his hometown, writing the names of fallen law enforcement officers on the cleats ahead of at least one game and wearing an Orlando United shirt under his uniform after the Pulse nightclub shooting. Despite going to Alabama, he was also was quick to recognize UCF as national champions following the 2017 Knights’ undefeated season. The one-loss Tide were irked by the Knights’ championship claim after winning the College Football Playoff national title game.

Clinton-Dix’s full birth name was Ha’Sean Treshon Clinton-Dix, but he was given the nickname Ha Ha by his grandmother and prefers it.

McCarthy was the coach in Green Bay when the Packers drafted Clinton-Dix 21st overall in 2014. He had 14 of his 16 career interceptions with Green Bay, including a career-high five in 2016. The Packers traded him to Washington during the 2018 season, and Clinton-Dix spent last year in Chicago.

The addition of Clinton-Dix comes after three-year starter Jeff Heath agreed to a deal with the Las Vegas Raiders. ClintonDix could start alongside Xavier Woods, although the Cowboys could target another safety in the middle of the first round of the draft.
