Here’s how to care for achimenes bulbs

If you need a lot, consider having a truckload of potting soil delivered.

Our camellia has finished blooming. How much pruning does it need?

Not very much pruning is needed by camellias. These shrubs are slow growers but normally produce thick compact plants. If stems become a bit lanky, simply tip them back a few inches. Should a shoot grow out of bounds, cut it back to within the plant. Some years, pruning won’t be needed. And do complete all pruning by the end of May as flower buds begin forming very early for next year’s blooms.

After I root a pineapple top, do I grow it in a container or in the ground? How long does it need to produce a fruit?

Where and how you grow pineapples depend on the winter months. If you expect freezing weather for even a night, grow your plants in containers. During the warm weather, they can be kept in full sun and, when really cold weather arrives, moved to a protected location. Pineapples grow well in the ground if you have a warm spot.

Don’t be disappointed, but naturally flowering pineapples need about three years to bloom. Normally

after two years of good growth, they flower the following spring. Fruits are ready to harvest five months later. Keep your plants moist and fertilize frequently to obtain the best production.

Just a little cold below 40 degrees is all it takes to affect banana plants. These plants develop yellow leaves but usually recover. When temperatures dip to freezing, the trunks and tops are severely damaged.

Give your plants a little time and they may send out new green shoots. If a flowering or fruiting stalk was present and damaged, the growth of that trunk is over and the plant should be cut to the ground. Don’t worry, however, as there should be new shoots from the base to grow and produce another crop.

Time has run out for this year’s spring crop of bulb-producing onions. Florida onions grow best during the cooler months and mature their bulbs during March and April. You might add a few more onion sets to the garden that produce scallions to harvest fresh in a matter of weeks. Plant new bulbproducing onions again in late October, which is the start of the next cool-season garden.
