After dispute, all are on same page
Florida State senior defensive tackle Marvin Wilson delivered an emotional message via Instagram outlining the way the football team is uniting and pledging to make three significant changes after a dispute with the head coach.
Wilson posted on Instagram Thursday, “Took a stand we got what we wanted & we are moving forward!!! I appreciate [coach Mike Norvell] for encouraging me to use my platform and speak for what me and [my] teammates believe in. Be the change that you need.”
Wilson said the entire football team agreed Thursday it will register to vote and raise funds for college scholarships for black students and to help support Tallahassee children.
An FSU football team meeting was called after Wilson questioned the accuracy of a statement Norvell gave about racial injustice and said his outraged teammates were refusing to participate in workouts.
Norvell told The Athletic’s Tashan Reed Wednesday, “We’ve had a lot of open communication with our team, our players and our coaches. I went back and forth individually with every player this weekend. And that was important to me because this is a heartbreaking time in our country.”
Wilson responded at 12:13 a.m. Thursday. “Man this [poop emoji] did not happen mane,” he posted on Twitter. “We got a generated text that was sent to everybody. There was no one on one talk between us and coach. This is a lie and me and my teammates as a whole are outraged and we will not be working out until further notice.”
