Orlando has a new ax-throwing venue. Rockstar Axe Throwing soft-opened on June 5 near University of Central Florida.

Kenneth Siu, owner of Rockstar Axe Throwing, said he chose this location because he wanted to provide unique entertainment for UCF students and working professionals in the area.

“It’s not bowling. It’s not going to the bar. It’s not pool,” he said. “It’s something that’s very different.”

While it’s fun, Siu said a lot of people underestimate the level of difficulty of sinking an ax into the target.

“It looks easy on the outside, but it’s actually a very difficult thing to do,” he said. “It’s something that you’re not normally used to doing … but when you’re able to hear the thunk in the wood, it sounds great. And you kind of get just a good kick out of landing that ax.”

On June 13, which is International Axe Throwing Day, there’s a record at stake. Organized by World Axe Throwing League — which Rockstar Axe Throwing is a part of — and its affiliates, more than 200 axthrowing facilities across the globe will attempt to break the world record for the most axes thrown simultaneously at a target. Axes can be thrown from any location at 3 p.m. on Saturday, and it will be broadcast via Google Meet.

If you want to celebrate in-person, Rockstar Axe Throwing will welcome participants, plus they’ll have raffles and prizes.

The venue has taken extra precautions to ensure customer safety, such as sanitizing all axes before and after each group, cleaning touchpoints several times a day, offering hand sanitizer throughout the facility, equipping coaches with face shields and altering the waiver process by removing waiver stations up front and allowing guests to sign using their cellphones.

“We are still instituting social distancing rules, keeping everybody six feet away,” Siu said. “Our lanes are actually designed so that the targets are all six feet away from each other, so the design in and of itself is already following that minimum standard.”

While Rockstar Axe Throwing customers aren’t required to wear face masks, it’s highly encouraged. For those who might have forgotten their mask at home, the business will soon sell Rockstar Axe Throwing face masks.

In addition, the venue has snacks (beef jerky, chips, candy, etc.), soft drinks, axes, shirts, toys, hats, alcoholic beverages and more available for purchase.

“You know, beer and axes, some might think they don’t go together, but if you think of this as a leisure activity, kind of like if you go bowling, you have a beer too,” he said. ‘It’s just a way to relax and kind of get comfortable with throwing axes.”
