Magic, FTC team up to help Project Life

- By Roy Parry

The Orlando Magic have announced a new partnership with Florida Technical College and the two are wasting no time working together in the community.

The Magic and FTC will join with Magic forward Jonathan Isaac and Project Life to help provide food assistance to Central Florida families.

The partnership seeks to help Project Life provide additional resources along with hot meals to areas of the Orlando community hit the hardest by the pandemic.

FTC students will prepare meals that will be donated to Project Life, and the students and FTC staff also will assist in distributing the food to the community.

Isaac, who is in his third season with the Magic, is a sponsor of Project Life’s COVID-19 Ready, Set, Feed program, which provides free meals daily to families in need. Isaac also assists in passing out the food and other items to families.

Last month, Isaac handed out pizzas at Royal Place Apartments in Orlando as part of an effort by Project Life, Pepsi’s Stronger

Together Campaign and Papa John’s to feed local families.

Vaughn next coach for Nets?

Nets interim coach Jacque Vaughn reportedly is drawing significant interest from the team’s front office as a strong candidate to become the team’s permanent head coach

Vaughn’s relationship with Brooklyn GM Sean Marks, going back to their time in San Antonio, is one reason. Another is how well players have seemingly responded to Vaughn since he took over as interim coach when the team and coach Kenny Atkinson parted ways.

The Nets, who are lead the Magic by half a game for the seventh spot in the Eastern Conference, are 2-0 under Vaughn.

Vaughn, who spent one season (2002-03) with the Magic as a player, was named Orlando’s head coach in 2012. He went 20-62 and 23-59 before being fired during the 2014-15 season amid a third straight rebuilding year under GM Rob Hennigan.

Vaughn joined the Nets as an assistant in 2016.

Refunds, credits for season ticket holders

The Magic have been in touch with season and partial plan ticket holders about the 10 regular-season games that were scheduled to be played in March and April but were affected by the coronavirus pandemic. Plan holders were able to choose an account credit or a refund upon request, according to a team spokesman.

In addition to scheduled home games against the Bulls, Cavaliers, Celtics, Hornets (2), Kings, Nets, Pacers, and Pelicans, the Magic were set to host the Raptors in the regular-season finale.

Those contests were put on hold — and eventually wiped out — when the NBA suspended its season on March 11 amid the pandemic. The NBA is resuming its season July 31 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Disney World with a reconfigured schedule. Fans will not be allowed to attend the games due to the pandemic.
