CELEBRATORY SAMMICHES

- By Amy Drew Thompson

Doughnuts and ice cream are coming together for National Ice Cream Sandwich Day (Aug. 2) courtesy of Orlando makers Kelly’s Homemade Ice Cream and small-batch doughnut bakery Orlandough.

Guests can opt for something off their list of perfectly paired flavors or create their own combos for a custom handheld.

“I’m not entirely sure where the idea for the doughnut ice cream sandwiches came from, but it’s definitely one of those indulgent pairings that just makes sense,” says Kristyn Minino, operations manager for Kelly’s. “Like, what will take these doughnuts to the next level? Kelly’s Homemade Ice Cream!”

The team worked hard to create a list of suggested flavor pairings, starting with the month’s featured ice cream flavors, then seeing which doughnuts were complementary.

Black Raspberry, for example, is an August featured flavor.

“Of course, that would pair well with chocolate,”

Minino notes, “but Orlandough has a ‘Lemon Pie’ anchor donut, so I thought the acidity of the lemon glaze would contrast the smooth sweetness of our Black Raspberry ice cream.”

There will be an abundance of doughnut options, chocolate- and fruit-based flavors, Minino says.

“We’re also featuring PB Cookie ice cream for August so her Black Out donut, a chocolate overload, if you will, was a natural pairing with peanut butter.

Kelly’s will be celebrating at all three locations from 3 p.m. until they run out (translation: go early if you can!) on Sunday, Aug. 2.
