Goalkeeper McLeod loaned to Ungmennafélag Stjarnan

- By Julia Poe

The Orlando Pride loaned goalkeeper Erin McLeod to Ungmennafélag Stjarnan, a team in the Icelandic league Úrvalsdeild Kvenna. The keeper has been in Iceland for several weeks and will join the club immediately, with the loan expiring this year on Oct. 20.

McLeod is the third Orlando Pride player to be loaned out for the rest of 2020 following the team’s withdrawal from the NWSL Challenge Cup. Defender Ali Riley and midfielder Camila both are on loan as well, with several other players expected to play abroad at some point this year.

After being acquired by the Pride in the offseason, McLeod has yet to play a minute for the team due to the season shutdown. She signed a one-year contract with an additional one-year option.

A veteran on the club and international level, McLeod played for the Canadian national team in the 2007, 2011 and 2015 FIFA World Cups and in the 2008 and 2012 Olympics. She was the starting keeper when Canada won its first medal with a shutout over France to take bronze at the 2012 Olympics.

During her career, McLeod notched 118 caps and 45 clean sheets for Canada.

After playing several seasons in the NWSL, McLeod played in Sweden for FC Rosengård alongside current Pride teammates Marta and Riley. During her two years with the team, Rosengård won two Svenska Cupen and a Svenska Supercupen title.

Since her time with FC Rosengård, McLeod played with Växjö DFF, then moved to Germany to play with SC Sand and FF USV Jena.

Initially, McLeod was signed to fill in for goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris, who was expected to miss part of the 2020 NWSL season while called up for the Tokyo Olympics. McLeod could play the same role in 2021 to accommodate the postponed Olympic Games.
