AROUND THE HORN

-

■ Cardinals: Catcher Matt Wieters was activated from the 10-day injured list Friday after being sidelined by a broken left big toe.

■ Cubs: The Cubs agreed to a minor league deal with Pedro Strop on Friday, bringing back the popular reliever after he was released by the Reds.

■ Nationals: The Nationals removed left fielder Juan Soto from the lineup for Friday's first game of a doubleheader against the Braves because of a sore left elbow. Soto's exit takes away one of baseball's top hitters and comes one day after another Washington outfielder, Adam Eaton, was forced out of Thursday night 's game with a jammed knee. The 21-yearold Soto is hitting .354 with 11 homers and 26 RBIs. He missed the Nationals' first eight games because of a positive test for the coronavirus, although he never had symptoms. Soto was listed as the No. 2 hitter in the original lineup announced by the team. In the adjusted lineup, Josh Harrison moved from third base to left field and Wilmer Difo played third. Earlier Friday, manager Dave Martinez said he hoped Eaton would be available for Friday night's second game. Eaton did not start in the first game after jamming his knee in Thursday's loss to Philadelphia. The starting outfield against the Braves included Harrison, Victor Robles in center field and Michael A. Taylor in right field.

■ Orioles: Pitcher Alex Cobb is headed to the 10-day IL. The team recalled Ramon Urias from the alternate training site and assigned outfielder Mason Williams outright to the alternate training site. The Orioles also assigned pitcher Zac Lowther to the alternate training site and selected the contract of pitcher Branden Kline from the alternate training site.

■ Reds: Reds took advantage of the Pirates' poor fielding for a 4-2 victory in the first game of a doubleheader Friday afternoon at PNC Park. The Pirates committed an error for the sixth consecutive game and have a dozen errors in that span. The second game is a makeup of their scheduled Aug. 15 game, which was postponed when a Reds player tested positive for COVID-19.

■ Twins: Jorge Polanco and Josh Donaldson hit back-to-back homers to lead off the bottom of the first inning, and Randy Dobnak bounced back with five scoreless innings as the Twins beat the Tigers 2-0 in the first game of Friday's doubleheader. Dobnak (6-2) gave up four hits, a walk and struck out four batters in his second straight start against the Tigers. In Game 2, Marwin Gonzalez came to the plate against the Tigers in the eighth inning, the first round of extra innings, with teammate Willians Astudillo on second base. Gonzalez poked a single off reliever Joe Jimenez into shallow center field, and Astudillo turned the corner for home plate. Center fielder Derek Hill bobbled the baseball and had no throw. That's all the Twins needed to produce a 3-2 victory against the Tigers (17-19). Before the doubleheader, Twins placed Max Kepler on the 10-day injured list.
