Global Peace Film Festival goes mostly virtual this year
Organizers of the Global Peace Film Festival had to shift their plans amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The 18th annual event, which includes thought-provoking films and art exhibits, is offering viewers worldwide the chance to enjoy online feature film screenings and virtual panel discussions from the comfort and safety of their homes. The fest will also host a couple of in-person events with enhanced safety measures.
Starting Sept. 21, which is also International Day of Peace, more than 20 feature films touching on themes from civil and human rights to environmental justice, ethics, immigration, music, social justice, voting, wellness and wildlife will be available for screening.
Many of the films will be available worldwide throughout the festival, which runs through Oct. 4, but a few are only available in the U.S. and North America. Three are Florida exclusives — “Can Art Stop a Bullet,” “Comrade Dov.” and “Mantra: Sounds into Silence (which only screens Sept. 21-24). To view the full lineup, go to peacefilmfest.org/program.
A separate selection of short films will be available for free at peacefilmfest.org/ online-film-festival.
In addition to these virtual events, guests can check out two in-person events.
■ Gas mask art exhibit “Bombshell: Masquerading Warfare” runs Sept. 17-Oct. 11 at City Arts (open 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday-Sunday at 39 S. Magnolia Ave. in Orlando; peacefilmfest.org/cityarts).
■ Audience members can vote for their favorite films created as part of FusionFest’s Mygration Short Film Contest, which will be shown 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. Sept. 29 at Enzian Theater (1300 Orlando Ave. in Maitland; $10 tickets; peacefilmfest.org/mygration-shorts-enzian).
