Thunder, Donovan part ways

Billy Donovan won’t return as coach of the Thunder after five seasons, the team announced Tuesday night.

Donovan, who was at the end of his contract, took the Thunder to the playoffs every year and was a finalist for coach of the year this season after his squad outperform­ed expectatio­ns and pushed the Rockets to seven games in the first round of the playoffs.

Donovan, 55, went 243-157 with the Thunder. Before that, he led the University of Florida to two national championsh­ips.

The team and Donovan described his departure as a mutual decision.

■ Defensive player of the year Giannis Antetokoun­mpo of the Bucks headlined the league’s all-defensive first team. Also selected: Lakers F Anthony Davis, 76ers G Ben Simmons, Jazz C Rudy Gobert and Celtics G Marcus Smart.

Cycling: Sprinter Sam Bennett prevailed ahead of Caleb Ewan to post his first career stage win in the Tour de France. Primoz Roglic kept the yellow jersey. Tour director Christian Prudhomme was forced to abandon the race after testing positive for the coronaviru­s.

NFL: The Browns and RB Kareem Hunt agreed to a two-year, $13.25 million contract extension with $8.5 million guaranteed. Hunt, 25, who grew up in the Cleveland area, was suspended last season by the league for two physical off-field altercatio­ns. He signed with the Browns as a free agent and upon return from the ban, rushed for 179 yards and two TDs and caught 37 passes for 285 yards and a TD over the final eight games. Hunt will start this season as the Browns’ No. 2 RB behind Pro Bowler Nick Chubb. ... The Cardinals and three-time Pro Bowl WR DeAndre Hopkins agreed to a two-year contract extension through the 2024 season worth $54.5 million over two years with a guaranteed $42.75 million. The deal, which Hopkins, 28, negotiated himself, also has a no-trade clause and no-franchise tag clause. ... The Broncos fear that LB Von Miller suffered a season-ending ankle injury during practice, ESPN reported. The 31-year-old former defensive player of the year underwent an MRI.

Soccer: Former U.S. national team defender Carlos Bocanegra will be the lone inductee to the National Soccer Hall of Fame for 2020. Bocanegra, currently technical director for Atlanta United, played for the national team from 2001-12, making 110 appearance­s, 64 as captain. He scored 14 goals, the most by any U.S. defender. Among those who didn’t reach the threshold for induction was former U.S. women’s team goalkeeper Hope Solo.

Tennis: World No. 2 Rafael Nadal will return from a seven-month layoff at next week’s Italian Open in Rome. Nadal, 34, last played in February and opted out of the U.S. Open because of concerns over the pandemic.
