Recording fast times at Lake Brantley High
Like all sports, swimming programs have been challenged with some pools closed and summer programs canceled due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
But last weekend’s Lake Brantley Invitational was once again a very fast meet.
“I was kind of surprised at how fast a lot of the times were,” longtime Brantley coach Clay Parnell said. “I wasn’t sure how it would go.”
Lake Brantley junior Sage Sungail stood out with personal-best times to win the 50-yard freestyle (20.30 seconds) and 500 free (4 minute, 27.82 seconds) at last Saturday’s Lake Brantley Invitational.
Oviedo senior Tyler Hanley scored four event wins, including two relays. He won the 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly, where he topped eight-time state champ Dawson Joyce of Seminole, who did not swim his favorite events.
Seminole senior Stephanie Akakabota clocked a fast 22.98 time to win the girls 50.
Lake Nona junior Jordan Agliano, a recent Kentucky commit, won the girls 100 back (55.32) and 500 free (4:47.73) in impressive times.
Oviedo’s boys, the reigning Class 4A state champs, won by a big margin in the team competition.
Winter Park topped 2019 state champ Oviedo for the girls team title.
Low numbers: Winter Park senior Michael Mays shot an 8-under-par 64 at North Shore Golf Club to lead the Wildcats to a tri-match boys golf win versus Boone and Timber Creek on Wednesday. The Wildcats had a 283 team total to win by 35 strokes and remain undefeated for the season at 13-0.
That perfect record will be put to a stern test with the Wildcats matched against other state title contenders at the Qdoba Tournament of Champions at Providence Golf Club.
Circle Christian senior Alex Crafton birdied the first five holes she played and finished with a 5-under 31 in a nine-hole victory against 2019 state champ
Lake Mary Prep on Wednesday at Timacuan Country Club.
Running in circles: Class1A Circle Christian swept the boys and girls team championships with decisive victories in last weekend’s Hagerty Invitational cross country meets.
Centurions sophomore Jack DeJesus led his team to the boys title over 11 much larger schools with a first place finish in a career-best time of 16:37.63.
Senior standout Sinkenesh Parker led Circle to the girls title with a first-place time of 18:52.89 for 5,000 meters. Parker is the reigning 1A state champ and has won all three of her races this season.
Lyman puts its15-0 girls volleyball record on the line against rugged competition in this weekend’s Nike Tournament of Champions.
Nike’s traditional TOC event, which drew 96 teams to Phoenix, Arizona, last fall, was shelved for a year due to the COVID-19 impact. This year’s 24-team event is

being held on a smaller scale and was moved to the Wiregrass Ranch Sports Campus outside Tampa. Play starts Friday.
Lyman is the top seed in its pool and the sixth seed overall.
Marietta Walton, which has won five consecutive Georgia state championships, is the tournament’s top seed, followed by St. Thomas Aquinas of Fort Lauderdale, North Raleigh Christian of North Carolina, Bishop McLaughlin of Spring Hill and Tampa Steinbrenner
The championship match is set for Saturday at 5 p.m.
Metro No. 1 up for grabs: It’s impossible to say who has the Metro Conference’s best girls volleyball team this season. What we do know is that there have been a lot of tight matches among the top teams.
Timber Creek (7-2) avenged an early season five-set loss to Boone when it edged the Braves (8-2) by scores of 24-26, 25-15,15-13 to win Saturday’s Metro East tournament championship match at Freedom.
Timber Creek’s second loss was also in five sets against Windermere, which improved to 6-1 with Wednesday’s 25-17, 22-25, 24-26, 25-16, 15-12 comeback win over the Wolves.
Dr. Phillips (4-2) edged Windermere 15-13 in the third set to win the Metro West tournament final. Then Lake Nona came from two sets down to defeat DP 22-25, 28-30, 25-17, 25-21, 15-12 to stake its claim as maybe the Metro’s best. Maybe.
We may have to wait for the state playoffs to decide who is No. 1 among Orange County Public Schools.
300 plateau: Kissimmee Osceola coach Carrie Palmi chalked up her 300th girls volleyball win with the Kowboys on Tuesday night. That ran her record to 300-113 over 16 seasons.
Osceola, which was 6-2 through Wednesday, averaged 22 wins over the past seven seasons.
