Ex-champ Ostapenko upsets No. 2 seed in Paris

2017 champion Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia eliminated No. 2 seed Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic at the French Open on Thursday in Paris, securing a 27-9 edge in winners en route to a 6-4, 6-2 second-round victory.

Ostapenko will next face Spain’s Paula Badosa, who topped 2017 U.S. Open champ and 2018 French Open runner-up Sloane Stephens 6-4, 4-6, 2-6.

Australian Open champ and No. 4 seed Sofia Kenin advanced with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Ana Bogdan of Romania.

In the men’s draw, No. 9 seed Denis Shapovalov of Canada fell to 101stranke­d Roberto Carballes Baena of Spain 7-5, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 3-6, 8-6.

“For me, it’s amazing,” Carballes Baena said after the upset victory.

No. 1 seed Novak Djokovic of Serbia cruised into the third round with a 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 win over Ricardas Berankis of Lithuania.

College football: The first CFP selection committee ranking was pushed back one week to Nov. 24, executive director Bill Hancock told ESPN. The date was moved from Nov. 17 after all 10 FBS conference­s announced their intentions to play a fall season. The 13-member selection committee will announce its fifth and final ranking on Selection Day, Dec. 20. It will be the fewest number of weekly rankings during the playoff era because of the ongoing coronaviru­s pandemic.

Golf: Charley Hoffman, Jimmy Walker, Kevin Chappell and defending champ Sebastian Munoz each shot an opening-round 8-under 64 to share a one-stroke lead at the Sanderson Farms Championsh­ip in Jackson, Miss. NFL: In a memo send to all 32 teams, the league detailed new procedures to follow for any club dealing with an outbreak or exposure to COVID-19 or teams exposed to a club with an active outbreak. The changes come in the wake of the an outbreak on the Titans, which led to their game against the Steelers originally. Teams will have to add a second daily test, including on game days. All meetings will be virtual, and both players and staff will have to wear face coverings and gloves at practice with only QBs allowed to keep their throwing hands uncovered. There’s new limits on how many can be in the weight room at any one time, and contract tracing info will be reviewed with general managers and coaches daily. And teams and players will not be allowed to hold any gatherings or group activities away from the facility.
