Florida reports 138 deaths, 6,640 new cases

Florida’s resident death toll from coronaviru­s rose to 30,478 with the addition of 138 more reported fatalities on Thursday while also adding 6,640 more positive COVID-19 cases to bring the total to 1,892,301.

With 540 non-Florida resident deaths, including 2 new reported Thursday, the state’s combined total stands at 31,018.

Across the state, 3,957 people were hospitaliz­ed with COVID-19 as of 2 p.m. Thursday, including 180 in

Orange County, 80 in Osceola, 66 in Lake and 63 in Seminole.

To date, 79,956 people have been hospitaliz­ed in Florida, according to the state’s report, which includes 281 newly reported hospitaliz­ations since Wednesday’s update.

Statewide, 2,838,326 people have received the first dose of the coronaviru­s vaccine, of which 1,539,770 people have received the second dose. The count is a snapshot through Wednesday, based on the report released Thursday

Of those who have received at least the first dose, 2,151,697 are over the age of 65. A detailed breakdown of who has been vaccinated so far can be found here.

To date, 11,012,025 people have been tested in Florida, 36,480 more than Wednesday’s total.

Statewide, the latest positivity rate reported Thursday for Wednesday’s test results by the Florida Department of Health was 5.23%, but that’s for new cases only and excludes anyone who previously tested positive. For all tested the positivity rate was 6.86%

Central Florida added 1,212 cases on Thursday for a total of 333,507: That includes 355 more in Orange for 113,330; 174 more in Polk for 56,583; 134 in Osceola for 36,521; 150 in Volusia for 34,240; 149 in Brevard for 33,578; 98 in Seminole for 26,967; 114 in Lake for 24,342; and 38 in Sumter for 7,946.

There were 29 new deaths across all eight Central Florida counties, although two less reported in Polk than Wednesday, bringing the region’s toll to 5,244. Polk County has the most coronaviru­s fatalities in the region with 1,131, followed by 1,091 in Orange, 736 in Brevard, 650 in Volusia, 544 in Lake, 435 in Osceola, 422 in Seminole and 235 in Sumter.

Central Florida accounts for more than 17.6% of the cases statewide and more than 17.2% of the deaths.
