Too much firepower

Magic can’t keep up with Nets, NBA’s No. 2 offense, suffer ugly road loss

- By Julia Poe

Turnovers haunted the Orlando Magic again in a 129-92 road loss to the Brooklyn Nets on Thursday night at Barclays Center.

Nets stars James Harden and Kyrie Irving combined for 47 points to clinch the 37-point blowout in Brooklyn.

Center Nikola Vucevic remained a consistent source of offense for the Magic (13-20), totaling 28 points and 12 rebounds to keep Orlando competitive in the game.

But only three of his teammates finished with double-figure scoring — Michael Carter-Williams and Dwayne Bacon with 11 points apiece and James Ennis with 15.

That wasn’t enough to hold off the potent Brooklyn (22-12) offense, which is ranked No. 2 in the league in scoring.

The Magic opened with a quick start, capitalizing on the Nets’ switch defense to open up pockets of space. When DeAndre Jordan clogged up the paint, Vucevic opted to kick the ball out to teammates to keep Brooklyn spread thin.

Neither team shot efficiently in the opening quarter — combining for 2 of 15 in the first four minutes — but Orlando came out with a slim four-point lead.

The Nets, however, came alive shooting from all areas of the court in the second quarter, blazing their

way to a double-digit lead.

Brooklyn scored 41 points in the second quarter alone, tearing up the Magic defense.

Coach Steve Clifford named turnovers as a main focus entering the game, noting Orlando has consistently allowed scoring opportunities directly after giving up the ball. The Magic coughed up 13 points off 11 turnovers in the first half alone, allowing Brooklyn to carve out a lead built on Orlando mistakes.

As the Magic attempted to claw back from of a 18-point halftime deficit, Ennis provided a spark, hitting two 3-pointers and dropping 11 points in the third quarter. But he struggled to score after a short hot streak.

The lead only grew in the second half as six Nets players put up double-digit scoring performances.

After scoring well throughout the last week, point guard Evan Fournier’s hot streak cooled off and he registered only eight points.

The Magic will return home to continue a challenging stretch of games ahead of the All-Star Break, facing the Utah Jazz on Saturday at Amway Center.

Tipoff is at 8 p.m. and the game will air on Fox Sports Florida.
