6,014 new infections, 132 more residents dead

Florida added 6,014 coronaviru­s cases Wednesday to bring the cumulative total to 1,924,114. With 132 more fatalities, 31,267 Florida residents are now dead.

Reported infections and deaths both continue to trend down statewide.

As of Wednesday’s report, the latest seven-day case count is 38,453, compared to the seven days before that which was 41,034.

For deaths, it’s 927 in the past seven days, compared with 1,029 for the seven days before that.

Each report includes deaths from several previous days, as it can take two weeks or more for fatalities to be logged.

Across the state, 3,596 people were hospitaliz­ed with COVID-19 as of about 2:40 p.m. Wednesday, including 158 in Orange County, 93 in Osceola, 77 in Lake and 67 in Seminole. The state’s online tool updates several times throughout the day.

To date, 81,278 people have been hospitaliz­ed in Florida, according to the state’s report, which includes 306 newly reported hospitaliz­ations since Tuesday’s update.

Nationwide, 46,388 people were listed as currently hospitaliz­ed with COVID-19 as of Tuesday. The figure is a real-time total, not a cumulative one, and it has been steadily dropping from a high of over 132,000 the first week of January. The COVID-19 Tracking Project updates hospitaliz­ation data once a day.

Statewide, 3,174,162 people have received the first dose of the coronaviru­s vaccine, of which 1,773,638 people have received the second dose.

The count is a snapshot through Tuesday, based on the report released Wednesday.

Of those who have received at least the first dose, 2,410,250 are over the age of 65.

To date, 11,176,275 people have been tested in Florida, 23,253 more than Tuesday’s total.

Statewide, the latest positivity rate reported Wednesday for Tuesday’s test results by the Florida Department of Health was 6.82%, but that’s for new cases only and excludes anyone who previously tested positive. For all cases including retests of those previously infected, the latest positivity rate is 7.19%.

Central Florida added 868 cases Wednesday for a total of 339,120: 244 more in Orange for 115,085; 157 more in Polk for 57,496; 64 in Osceola for 37,045; 111 in Volusia for 34,791; 91 in Brevard for 34,303; 80 in Seminole for 27,464; 97 in Lake for 24,841; and 24 in Sumter for 8,095.

There were 11 new deaths across all eight Central Florida counties, bringing the region’s toll to 5,365, although Osceola County’s total was one less than what was reported Tuesday. Polk County has the most coronaviru­s fatalities in the region with 1,152, followed by 1,107 in Orange, 751 in Brevard, 666 in Volusia, 567 in Lake, 447 in Osceola, 434 in Seminole and 241 in Sumter.

The virus has infected over 114.9 million people and has killed over 2.5 million worldwide, according to the Johns Hopkins University & Medicine Coronaviru­s Resource Center. Nationwide, 28.7 million people have been infected and over 517,000 have died.
