Big numbers boost Lake Mary’s Ireland to top honors

Lake Mary’s Jack Ireland showed a prowess for scoring goals this season while inspiring his team’s run to the FHSAA state semifinals.

Ireland is the 2020-21 Sentinel Varsity boys soccer player of the year off the strength of a 24-goal season for the Rams. The junior, who was previously named Seminole Athletic Conference player of the year, helped Lake Mary outscore opposing teams 75-21 and finish with a 21-3-1 record.

Lake Mary senior defender Justin Dorman joins Ireland on the all-area first team. Lake Nona, Trinity Prep and Cypress Creek each also is represente­d by two players on the first team.

Player of the Year

Jack Ireland, Lake Mary, F, Jr. Buzz: Ireland thrived as a striker for a fast-paced Lake Mary squad that finished the season as a Class 7A state semifinali­st and the No. 1-ranked team in the Orlando area. “What made him so dominant is the combinatio­n of physicalit­y and technical ability,” Lake Mary coach Tyler Weston said. Ireland had nine multi-goal games and finished with 24 goals and 13 assists.

All-Area First Team

Charles Ahl, Trinity Prep, MF, Sr.

Buzz: Scored 14 goals and added nine assists in 10 games before missing time due to injury.

Will Barth, Clermont East Ridge, F, Sr.

Buzz: Did it all in final third of field for Knights while amassing 20 goals and 19 assists.

Cesar Beltran, DeLand, F, Sr. Buzz: Focal point for opposing defenders managed to amass 31 goals and nine assists in 15 games.

Luis Carlos Cruz, Cypress Creek, D, Jr.

Buzz: Helped Bears register 13 clean sheets while allowing just five goals in 17 matches.

Justin Dorman, Lake Mary, D, Sr.

Buzz: Scored four goals, assisted on four goals and helped Rams hold teams to 21 goals in 25 games.

Dalton Fleshood, Lake Nona, MF, Sr.

Buzz: Team captain had seven goals and five assists for Lions, who went unbeaten in regular season.

Jake Joyce, Winter Park, MF, Sr.

Buzz: Led Wildcats to regional final round and 13-3-3 record with 13 goals scored and seven assists.

Christian Miranda-Cordeiro, Ocoee, MF, Sr.

Buzz: Tallied 14 goals and 12 assists this season as captain of district championsh­ip team.

Marcos Rondon, Cypress Creek, D, Sr.

Buzz: Joined talented teammate Tomas Yriate as selection on Florida Athletic Coaching Associatio­n all-star roster.

Diego Villalobos, Lake Nona, MF, Sr.

Buzz: Scored six goals while rotating among three positions for team that allowed just 12 goals.

Shane Wright, Trinity Prep, GK, Soph.

Buzz: Turned in 15-1-0 mark with 11 shutouts and seven goals against for Class 3A state semifinali­sts.
