- By Richard Tribou

Florida’s resident death toll from coronavirus rose to 33,338 with the addition of 91 more reported fatalities on Tuesday while also adding 5,062 more positive COVID-19 cases to bring the total to 2,052,441.

The daily infections had dipped below 5,000 for the last two days, but climbed back over with Tuesday’s report so that six of the last eight days have been north of 5,000. The slight rise in cases has come mostly from those under the age of 65, but overall, the state has not reported more than 10,000 daily cases since Feb. 5.

Reported deaths have fallen back from January and February highs, even more so in the last couple of weeks with most days falling below 100 fatalities reported daily. For March, the average daily reported fatalities is 83, significantly lower than the daily averages of more than 150 seen in the first two months of 2021.

With 645 non-Florida resident deaths, including 1 new reported Tuesday, the state’s combined total stands at 33,983. Each report includes deaths from several previous days, as it can take weeks and sometimes several months for reports to appear.

Across the state, 2,922 people were hospitalized with COVID-19 as of 2 p.m. Tuesday including 144 in Orange County, 72 in Osceola, 41 in Lake and 61 in Seminole. The state’s online tool updates several times throughout the day.

To date, 86,397 people have been hospitalized in Florida, according to the state’s report, which includes 273 newly reported hospitalizations since Monday’s update.

Statewide, 5,761,310 people have received at least one vaccination shot including 3,204,377 who have completed their shot regimen, whether it’s the two-dose Pfizer or Moderna option or the one-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

The count is a snapshot through Monday, based on the report released Tuesday.

Of those who have received at least the first dose, 3,304,446 are over the age of 65.

To date, 11,859,459 people have been tested in Florida, 23,856 more than Monday’s total.

Statewide, the latest positivity rate reported Tuesday for Monday’s test results by the Florida Department of Health was 6.36%, but that’s for new cases only and excludes anyone who previously tested positive. For all tested, the positivity rate was 8.05%.

Central Florida added 1,150 cases on Tuesday for a total of 364,416: That includes 334 more in Orange for 123,352; 167 more in Polk for 61,019; 110 in Osceola for 39,521; 174 in Volusia for 38,069; 104 in Brevard for 37,116; 139 in Seminole for 29,955; 97 in Lake for 26,604; and 25 in Sumter for 8,780.

There were 31 new deaths across all eight Central Florida counties bringing the region’s toll to 5,764. Polk County has the most coronavirus fatalities in the region with 1,247, followed by 1,185 in Orange, 807 in Brevard, 716 in Volusia, 601 in Lake, 484 in Osceola, 466 in Seminole and 258 in Sumter.

The virus has infected nearly 128 million people and has killed nearly 2.8 million worldwide, according to the Johns Hopkins University & Medicine Coronavirus Resource Center. Nationwide, over 30 million people have been infected and over 550,000 are dead.
