- By Tiffini Theisen

A man was charged with stalking a jogger in DeBary this week after another jogger came forward to report he had followed her too back in October, the Volusia Sheriff ’s Office said Wednesday. Another potential victim came forward Thursday, a spokesman said.

Jonathan Buchanan, 31, followed a 25-year-old woman in his car about 7:30 a.m. on Monday near Community Drive and South Shell Road before she was able to run to a group of construction workers for help, according to the department.

She captured video of the silver Dodge Caliber, including its tag number QWYR78, which was traced back to Buchanan, the sheriff’s office said.

Buchanan was already in custody after he was arrested Tuesday in a traffic stop in DeBary on a criminal traffic violation (failure to update his address) and violation of a probation charge.

On Wednesday, the sheriff’s office said a simple stalking charge and an additional violation of probation were added.

October’s victim, a 31-year-old DeBary woman, contacted the Sheriff’s

Office on Tuesday afternoon after seeing news about the latest stalking incident.

She met with detectives and told them she noticed Buchanan’s car following her on her jog in DeBary, stopping when she stopped to drink water.

“She said when she saw the photo of Buchanan and his vehicle she immediately recognized him as the one who followed her,” the sheriff ’s office said in a statement. Any additional victims are encouraged to contact Sgt. Ryan Mills at RMills@vcso. us or 386-668-3830.

Detectives say Buchanan, whose registered address is in South Daytona, has been living in DeBary without updating his address, a violation of his probation.

In 2017, Buchanan was convicted in the attempted kidnapping of a 16-year-old girl.

“In that case, Buchanan got out of his vehicle, approached the victim, tried to start a conversation with her and then put his hand over her mouth and tried to force her into his vehicle,” according to the department. “She bit him and escaped, and Buchanan fled, but Ponce Inlet police later found him in his vehicle with his pants unbuttoned and a stuffed animal in the front seat.”
