Mecum Kissimmee car auction breaks sales record

- By Patrick Connolly

As new and used cars continue to fetch high prices, Mecum Kissimmee has proved collector cars match the trend as the auction tallied $217 million in sales over the course of 11 days.

Mecum Auctions’ Central Florida event saw record-breaking total sales, claiming the highest total achieved by a single collector car auction. In addition, each of the 11 days at Osceola Heritage Park broke single-day auction records for the Kissimmee event.

Leading up to the auction, Mecum CEO Dave Magers was optimistic based on the company’s recent trajectory and the demand for collector cars.

“We’re getting about the same number of cars that we traditionally have for each of our auctions but the prices are higher and the crowds are much bigger,” Magers said in a previous Sentinel interview. “When great cars start to bring really good prices, owners of great cars think, ‘Now, I need to sell my car. The market is right.’ ”

Overall, Mecum achieved a 90 percent sell-through rate with nearly 3,000 vehicles changing hands over the course of the event. Thirteen vehicles reached seven-figure sale prices.

The 1965 Shelby GT350R Prototype, recognized as the most historically significant Shelby Mustang in the world, was number one on the list of top-selling lots, fetching $3.75 million. Other million-dollar lots

included a 2020 McLaren Speedtail ($3.3 million), a 1992 Ferrari F40 ($2.75 million), a 1955 MercedesBenz 300SL Gullwing ($2.64 million) and the 1951 Hirohata Mercury

Custom ($2.15 million).

The Kissimmee event also represented the start of a new partnership between Mecum and MotorTrend, which offered fans options to

watch on TV or streaming on MotorTrend+.

Mecum Auctions returns to Central Florida in July for a summer special with 1,000 vehicles up for auction at the

Orange County Convention Center. For more information and to see all lots from Mecum Kissimmee, visit mecum.com.
