FSU snags former Oregon RB Benson from transfer portal

- By Chris Hays

Florida State added another player from the NCAA transfer portal Tuesday with the addition of former Oregon running back Trey Benson.

Benson, who was ranked by 247 Sports as the top running back in Mississippi coming out of St. Joseph’s Catholic School in 2020, did not play his freshman season at Oregon after a brutal knee injury during practice in December of his first year.

He tore his anterior cruciate ligament, medial collateral ligament, medial cartilage, lateral cartilage and had other tendon injuries and some nerve damage.

Benson said last year at the Pac-12 preseason media days, “Basically, I tore everything.”

He came back this past season and saw limited action in nine games for the Ducks, and carried the ball in only two of them. He rushed for 22 yards and a touchdown on 6 carries.

Benson wore a heavy brace on his right leg all season. How he fits into the Seminoles running backs rotation remains to be seen. The ‘Noles suffered a big blow when third-team All-ACC running back Jashaun Corbin declared for the NFL Draft after his redshirt sophomore year. Corbin, who rushed for 887 yards and 7 touchdowns on 143 carries, played his first season at Texas A&M.

The ‘Noles’ second leading rusher last season was quarterback Jordan Travis (134 carries, 530 yards, 7 TDs).

Corbin’s departure leaves FSU with seven young running backs entering the spring: D.J. Williams, a redshirt junior who had 10 carries for 47 yards a touchdowns; redshirt sophomore Treshaun Ward (81 carries, 515 yards, 4 TDs); and redshirt sophomores Lawrance Toafili (22 carries, 63 yards, 1 TD); Ja’Khi Douglas (7 carries, 6 yards); athlete Corey Wren; and sophomore CJ Campbell.
